Berlin : Day 1
We arrived late to Berlin from Denmark, we got to the Airbnb just before the rain and lightning started. We were very warmly greeted by Hans, who let us in and showed us the lovely apartment. This man was such a good host, he had a fruit tray, snacks, gummy bears, and stocked the fridge with milk and 6 fantastic German beers.
In the morning I grabbed a quick and easy breakfast of pasties, donuts and croissants from Petit Café just around the corner, and I quickly bopped back to deliver the goods before we set off for our day. The day started off with just a light sprinkle, and we hoped that would continue but it quickly evolved into rounds of downpours.
Thankfully Berlin has an extensive metro and underground system. We scurried to the nearest U station to hop on the 12 minute ride from where we were staying in the Viktoria-Quartier neighborhood just south of the central Berlin.
Once we got to the city center we quickly realized that the rain jackets weren’t going to be enough. We snatched up a couple of umbrellas, souvenirs and a sweatshirt, for Remy, from the famous Appelmann store to really show out like true tourists.
The thunderstorm was a treat. Big bright lightning bolts across the Berlin sky, followed by the most interesting thunder I had ever heard. It boomed loud and echoed strangely through the Berlin low rise apartments, sounding like a rumbling train charging through the city.
As great as our initial impressions of Berlin were we didn’t realize the storm would linger through the following day and put a bit of a damper on our short stay in the German capital. ⛈️☔️🌧️
